TeamCBC Weekly Cycling Tip – How to Ride Solo

With many people riding solo this year due to the pandemic, I thought it would be a good time to review the basics.

  1. Plan your route – You should determine your rest stop options ahead of time. Once you’ve ridden over two hours, you’re going to need water, especially in this heat. Also you should have a plan B. You may want to ride 70, but if you’re not feeling it, have a shorter route ready to go.
  2. Pack lots of spares – Make sure to bring an extra CO2 cartridge or perhaps a second spare tube. Also have some tools in case you have a mechanical.
  3. Keep in touch – Let someone know where you’re going and when you expect to be back. Also make sure to bring a fully charged cell phone in case of emergency.
  4. Remember your snacks – Bring one or two extra bars or gels in case you make a wrong turn and that 50 miler turns into 70 miles. Remember to bring some cash to buy water or food.
  5. Pace yourself – There’s no wheel to hang onto when you get tired, so don’t go out too hard. Again, in this heat, it’s probably not the time to set too many PR’s. Also make frequent stops or slow down your pace if needed.
  6. COVID concerns – Due to the pandemic you should bring a mask in case you need to go into a store. Also have a small bottle of hand sanitizer. Finally, maintain social distancing when approaching another rider.
